Buccellato Taddeucci
A local institution that, as it says on the inside, "has no branches". The message is clear: you're in the home of those who created Buccelato, a lightly aniseed- and raisin-flavored brioche bread that can be enjoyed at any time of day, from breakfast to a light supper or, of course, Italian tea-time. A photo hanging on the walls of the store bears witness to the day when Pope John Paul II was presented with a Buccelato by the owners themselves. Next to that, the label "By appointment to Her Majesty" sounds like a discount slogan! Apart from this treasure trove of the local gastronomic heritage (which you'll find at many competing patisseries), Taddeucci offers you the chance to sample Capuccini, Spritz and other Italian delights all day long, literally at the foot of San Michele church and in one of the city's most beautiful squares. Don't forget to pop in and have a look around, or buy a few sweet treats in this tiny, long pastry bar. You'll get a pretty good idea of what a shop in Lucca looked like a century ago.
