De’ Coltelli gelateria artigianale
Lucca, like any Italian city, is full of artisan ice-cream makers. It's fair to say that almost all of them are good, or even very good, but we've fallen in love with this artisan who has a slightly different offer based on a very exclusive selection of basic products and a slightly offbeat proposal in terms of fragrance/taste. They are closed for part of the year, as winter is not the right season for some of their fragrances, and they only work with fresh produce. The range varies from one day to the next, and it's not unusual for certain fragrances to run out during the day, as production is truly artisanal and takes place right behind the sales counter.
At De' Coltelli you'll find the great classics (vanilla, chocolate, coffee, lemon, etc.) in an "Excellence" version, but also a genuine pistachio ice cream (not pistachio flavored!), cashew nut, organic mango sorbet from Sicily, blood peach from Pisa (very limited edition), gooseberry from Garfagnana (the nearby mountain north-east of Lucca), bergamot from Calabria. In short, excellence, boldness and taste.
